Ammonia's toxicity also rises with pH and temperature, so the same reading is more dangerous in a warm, alkaline tank than a cool, acidic one. That is another reason the answer is always zero rather than "a little is fine."

A cycle can also crash later — after a filter media replacement, medication, or a long power cut. If ammonia appears in an established tank, something disrupted the bacteria.

Why does stability beat hitting a perfect number?

This is the part most beginners get backwards. A tank sitting steadily at pH 7.8 is a far better home than a tank being pushed up and down between 6.8 and 7.6 with pH-adjusting products. Fish acclimate to a consistent environment; they cannot acclimate to one that changes every few days.

Most commonly kept freshwater fish are captive-bred and tolerate a reasonably wide range. What they do not tolerate is sudden change — in pH, hardness, or temperature. What if my pH is off?

First, decide whether it is actually a problem. A steady pH of 8.0 in a tank of healthy, well-coloured, actively feeding fish is not an emergency. Look at the fish before you look at the test tube.

If the pH is genuinely unsuitable or unstable, work through this order:

  1. Test your tap water — both fresh from the tap and after sitting out 24 hours. Dissolved CO₂ can make tap water read lower than it settles at.
  2. Check KH. A pH that drifts downward over weeks almost always means low carbonate hardness. Fixing KH fixes the drift at its source.
  3. Look at the hardscape. Crushed coral, limestone, and some shells raise pH and hardness; driftwood and peat lower them. Both work slowly and gently, which is exactly what you want.
  4. Increase water changes. Accumulated waste acidifies water over time, so a lapsed maintenance schedule is a common cause.
  5. Use RO water only if you must — blending reverse-osmosis water with tap is the reliable way to soften hard water for soft-water species, but it commits you to remineralising every batch.

Avoid instant "pH down" and "pH up" bottles. Without adequate KH they wear off within days, and the resulting rebound is far worse for fish than the original reading.

Do all freshwater fish need the same parameters?

No — and this is where the general chart stops being enough. Soft-water species from blackwater habitats (many tetras, rasboras, wild-caught dwarf cichlids, discus) prefer acidic water with low GH.
