Two tanks can hold the same plants, rocks, and fish, and one looks like a landscape while the other looks like a box with things in it. The difference is almost never money or plant count. It's layout.

Decide the style before you buy anything
You needn't commit to a school, but knowing the four common approaches saves you from an accidental mixture of all of them:
- Nature style. Rocks and wood arranged to suggest a natural landscape — a hillside, a forest floor, a riverbank — with plants softening the structure. The most forgiving starting point.
- Iwagumi. Stone only, no wood, usually an odd number of stones with one clearly dominant. Beautiful and unforgiving: with nothing bushy to hide behind, every placement shows.
- Jungle. Dense, tall, deliberately wild. The most beginner-friendly by a wide margin, because growth hides mistakes rather than exposing them.
- Biotope. Everything matched to one real habitat — a Southeast Asian blackwater stream, a Rio Negro margin. Constrains your choices but suits the fish well.
For a first scape, aim at nature style or jungle. Iwagumi looks simple in photographs and is the hardest thing here to do convincingly.
Fish first, scenery second
This is where enthusiasm most often goes wrong. A scape filled end to end with wood and stems leaves no open water, and plenty of popular fish need it — active shoalers like danios and rasboras cruise horizontally, and a tank packed solid becomes an obstacle course. Bottom-dwellers such as corydoras need clear sand to forage over, so sharp gravel and dense carpets both work against them.
So before you place a rock, decide roughly what will live there and check what those species need: adult size, open-water swimmer or bottom-dweller, shade-lover or not. Then set a rule: keep a meaningful portion of the tank as open swimming space and open substrate. That constraint improves the aquascape too — empty space is what makes the planted areas read as features.
The three placement rules that do most of the work
Never centre the focal point. A big rock or piece of wood dead in the middle splits the tank into two competing halves. Place your main element roughly a third of the way in from one side. Aquascapers often use the golden ratio — a point around 62% along the width — but the rule of thirds gets you close enough that nobody will measure.
Use odd numbers, and vary the sizes. Three stones, five, seven. Even groupings pair off visually and look arranged; odd groupings resolve into a composition. Three rocks of similar size read as three rocks; one large and two small read as a formation.
Angle everything the same way. If your main stone leans left, the others should broadly agree. Consistent direction suggests flow — water, wind, geology — and it's the cheapest way to make a hardscape look natural rather than placed.
Build depth into a shallow box
A standard tank is only 30–40 cm front to back. Every technique below is about faking more:
- Slope the substrate. Low at the front, high at the back, roughly a 2:1 difference. Even 2 cm rising to 5–6 cm shifts the perception noticeably, and it gives root-feeding background plants the depth they want.
- Grade your materials and plants. Larger stones, coarser gravel, and small-leaved plants toward the front; finer material and larger leaves behind. Forced perspective, straight out of model-making — a big-leaved sword at the front kills depth instantly.
- Cut a path or valley. A strip of pale sand that starts wide at the front glass and narrows going back reads unmistakably as distance. The most effective single trick here.
- Keep the back darker. Denser planting behind, lighter and more open in front, mimics how depth actually looks underwater.
- Leave a gap at the glass. A couple of centimetres of clearance front and sides makes cleaning possible and stops the scape looking cramped.
Choosing hardscape without wrecking your water
Materials aren't neutral. Some change your water chemistry, which matters more than looks.
Stone. Seiryu stone is dramatic but limestone-based: it dissolves slowly and raises carbonate and general hardness — fine for hard-water species, a problem for soft-water fish. Dragon stone (Ohko) is clay-based and essentially inert, with deep texture that looks good immediately; the most forgiving choice. Lava rock is inert, light, and porous enough to house beneficial bacteria, useful as bulk under a visible layer.
The test is simple: a few drops of vinegar on a dry rock. Vigorous fizzing means carbonate, so it will raise hardness. No reaction means it's broadly inert.
Wood. Spiderwood has fine branching that suits nature-style layouts and small tanks, but usually needs soaking or weighting because it floats at first. Malaysian driftwood is dense and typically sinks straight away. Manzanita branches beautifully for suggesting trees.
All wood leaches tannins, tinting the water amber and nudging pH down slightly. That's harmless — beneficial for blackwater species — but if you want clear water, boil or soak the wood first and run activated carbon for a few weeks. Expect a white, fuzzy biofilm on new wood within days too: normal, grazed on by shrimp and many fish, and it passes on its own.
Substrate: decide before you scape, not after
Changing it later means dismantling everything, so choose deliberately.
Inert sand or gravel is cheap, stable, and doesn't alter water chemistry; plants will need root tabs or water-column dosing to thrive in it. If you keep corydoras or loaches, smooth sand is materially kinder to their barbels than sharp gravel.
Aquasoil is nutrient-rich, holds roots well, and typically buffers pH downward, which suits most soft-water community fish. Fresh aquasoil leaches ammonia for the first weeks — convenient, because it feeds your cycle, but it means no fish until the tank is cycled and testing clean. Either way, a low barrier — a line of small stones, or a rigid divider tucked out of sight — stops your slope collapsing flat within a month.
Plant it in the right order, and plant it heavily
Work in this sequence: substrate, then hardscape, then plants, then water.
- Attach epiphytes to the hardscape first, while everything is dry and reachable. Anubias, java fern, and bucephalandra grow from a rhizome that must stay above the substrate — bury it and it rots. Tie them on with cotton thread or a dot of cyanoacrylate gel, safe once cured.
- Plant background stems and rosettes, then midground, then foreground. Working front to back means reaching over finished areas and dislodging them.
- Plant more heavily than feels necessary. A densely planted tank outcompetes algae for nutrients from day one; a sparse tank hands algae the vacancy. The most reliable algae prevention there is, and free.
- Fill slowly onto a plate, bowl, or plastic bag laid over the substrate. A direct pour will excavate your slope in about four seconds.

Lighting: the most common beginner mistake
More light does not mean more plant growth. It means more of whatever can use it — and in a young tank with a small plant mass and no CO2, that's usually algae.
Start with a modest photoperiod, around six hours a day on a timer. If after a few weeks the plants are growing well and the glass stays clean, extend by 30 minutes and watch again. If algae appears, shorten rather than reaching for a chemical. Consistency matters more than duration, which is what the timer is for.
Live with it before you fix it
A new scape looks stark, and most beginners rescape at week two — disturbing a cycling tank and starting over. Give it six to eight weeks instead, and photograph the tank on day one and at week eight. It's the only reliable way to see growth you've watched happen daily.

Do I need CO2 injection to aquascape?
No. Plenty of attractive planted tanks run without it on low-demand species — anubias, java fern, cryptocorynes, vallisneria, bucephalandra. CO2 mainly enables fast-growing and carpeting plants. Without it, choose plants that don't need it rather than fighting those that do.
How deep should aquarium substrate be?
